The NZ electricity market is genuinely confusing. There are over a dozen retailers, plans vary by region and time of day, and the cheapest option changes depending on your usage patterns. Most Kiwis stick with whatever retailer they were on when they moved in, overpaying by hundreds of dollars a year because switching feels complicated. Powermoves was designed to fix that.
The concept: an energy comparison and switching service that actually explains what you’re comparing. Not just a price per kWh table, but a clear view of what your current usage would cost across every plan in your area. Enter your address, connect your smart meter or upload a bill, and get a ranked list of plans with the projected annual saving. One click to switch, handled end-to-end.
This isn’t a code project — it’s a strategy and product thinking project. The deliverables are a pitch deck, market research, competitive analysis, and a product brief detailed enough that a team could build from it. The validation came from a letter of intent from the CMO of Electric Kiwi, one of NZ’s more innovative energy retailers, who saw the concept and wanted to explore a commercial relationship.
Powermoves is included here as a case study because product thinking that attracts serious industry interest is worth documenting, even when there’s no codebase to point to.
