Eight Hours on Your Face. Still Plastic.

When natural fibres exist, why are almost all sleep masks made from synthetic materials?

Every box in the sleep aisle sells a promise about light, or cooling, or contour. Not one of them says what the thing is made of, though it will sit against the thinnest skin on your body for eight hours a night. The high country here grows some of the finest wool in the world. The masks are plastic.

In the sleep aisle the boxes stand four deep, and the back of each one is a list of promises about light. Total blackout. Contoured cups that keep the fabric off your lashes. A cooling gel insert. A strap that will not catch your hair. What I could not find on any of them was the sentence saying what the thing is made of.

The fibre is in there somewhere, on the underside, in the smallest type on the package, beside the wash symbols. It is handled the way a legal disclosure is handled: present, and no part of the pitch. Two shelves over, the bedding runs the same play with a number. A sheet is sold on thread count, which measures how densely the cloth is woven and tells you nothing about what the thread is. A very high number can be a plastic sheet.

For about a third of your life your face is pressed against one of these things: a pillowcase, a sheet, and for a lot of people a mask worn eight hours a night against the thinnest skin on the body. It is the material you have more sustained physical contact with than anything else you own. It is also close to the cheapest thing in the room.

It looks like a price problem

The obvious reading is price, and it arrives with a number that ends most arguments. A basic synthetic mask is about $5 in a supermarket. A merino one, made properly, lands somewhere between $80 and $150. That is a gap of between 10 and 30 times, which is not a rounding error and not a matter of taste. At that spread, part of this market is a genuine price choice. Plenty of people would hold the better thing, agree that it feels better, and put it down anyway. The cheap mask is not winning by trickery. It is winning at $5.

Saying the number plainly makes the rest of this easier rather than harder, because it marks off the part of the problem that price explains. Price explains why the cheap mask outsells the good one. It does not explain why the good one is close to absent. And it does not explain the silence on the box.

When a market has a real objection to something, it says so out loud. The supermarket own brand tells you it is the same as the brand for half the money. The synthetic jacket tells you it dries faster than wool. Nothing in the sleep aisle argues against merino, or cotton, or silk, because nothing in the sleep aisle mentions them. No argument is being lost here. Nobody opened one.

What the fibre already knows

This is where I had it filed wrong. I had it down as a demand problem: people will not pay for good material in something they only sleep in. Then I went and looked at what happens to the fibre long before it reaches a shelf, and the demand story stopped fitting.

Merino is measured to a degree that would surprise anyone who has only met it as a jumper. The fibre spans roughly 10 to 24 micron, and the high-country clip this country is known for is among the finest wool grown anywhere, ultrafine, often under 18.5 micron, with superfine classed below 19. (The New Zealand Merino Company 2026) (Forest Range High Country Ultrafine Merinos 2026) Since 2007 the ZQ standard has traced certified bales back to the farm that grew them, with the grower’s animal welfare, environmental, and social record attached to the bale. (The New Zealand Merino Company 2026) Somebody knows the micron count. Somebody knows the paddock, and the name of the family on it.

Then the wool becomes a thing you can buy, and almost none of that survives the journey. Not because it was lost. Because there is nowhere on the front of a box for it to go, and no competitor forcing one open. This country describes the fibre more precisely than it describes almost anything else it grows. The shelf is where the description stops.

The one axis nobody competes on

The thing we touch most is optimised for everything except touch. The features on the box are real, and all of them are beside the point of the eight hours your face is on it. Blackout matters for the ten seconds you notice the room is dark. The fibre matters for the whole night.

There is content on that axis, and some of it is unflattering. The wool industry’s own research credits merino with temperature regulation, moisture management, and natural odour resistance, which is worth reading as the industry making its case rather than as neutral fact. (The Woolmark Company 2026) On the other side, researchers at Plymouth found that a single domestic wash of synthetic fabric can release more than 700,000 microplastic fibres. (Imogen Napper and Richard Thompson 2016) That study is about laundering garments rather than about masks, but it is the same fibre doing the same thing. None of it is contested at the level of the box, because none of it appears on the box. Naming the material would invite the one comparison the cheapest option loses.

You can watch the logic run in the two masks that already exist. The silk one innovated on how it looks and stayed cold, thin, and prone to leaking light at the edges. The foam one innovated on darkness and delivered it inside a synthetic cup that traps heat against your face all night. Both improved an axis you can judge in a shop under fluorescent light. Both left the part you feel at three in the morning exactly where it was.

A category can look busy and competitive, shelves full, and never surface the choice that matters. That is not a free market where the better material was offered and turned down. It is an aisle that has settled, up and down its length, on not competing where competing would cost everyone money. Nobody chose plastic. Plastic is what you get when nobody is choosing.

Putting the material back on the menu

So the answer is not another feature. It is making the material the product: the ultrafine wool this country already grows, put exactly where a person’s face goes, with that as the entire pitch. Not a cooling gel, not a strap system, not a sleep score. This is what it is made of, and this is why it feels the way it does.

That leaves the price gap standing, because nothing about naming the fibre removes it. It puts the number in front of someone who has finally been given a reason to look at it. Whether enough people will pay is the open question, and a waitlist is the cheapest way to ask it.

What I no longer believe is that we arrived here by weighing the better thing and declining it. A choice you were never offered is not a preference you expressed. It is a default, wearing the costume of one.
