Just Show Me the Train

If Uber can show me exactly where my driver is, why does the train app keep showing me a timetable instead of the train?

The app says the next train is three minutes away. The track is empty in both directions, and it was saying three minutes a while ago too. Every commuter knows the small arbitration that follows, screen against rails, and nobody tells you which of the two accounts of your evening to believe.

The 5:52 did not come. The app was sure of it: three minutes away, it said, with the calm of something already accomplished, and it kept saying it for long enough that three minutes stopped meaning anything. Around me a platform’s worth of Aucklanders ran the same small dance: phone, track, phone. The rails were empty in both directions. The screen was confident. And in the gap between those two, the evening’s real question formed: which one do you believe?

It is an ordinary question, and every city with trains has a version of it. What kept me on it was that the answer refused to be ordinary.

It must be the data

The explanation everyone reaches for first is technical, and it deserves to be taken seriously, because it is usually the true one. Transport agencies are not admired for their software. A static timetable is a cheap thing to ship: a table of times that changes rarely and can be published once and forgotten. A live map is a hard thing, a moving picture stitched together from hardware on every vehicle, and hardware drops out, and a map that shows a train in the wrong place is worse than no map at all. On this reading the app shows a schedule because a schedule is the safe, buildable thing, the guessing on the platform is simply what commuting costs, and it will get better when the data gets better.

That is a complete and reasonable account, and it survives right up until you go looking for the data.

The measurement already exists

Auckland Transport publishes a live feed of where its vehicles actually are. It follows GTFS-Realtime, the open standard most of the world uses for this, and it carries three streams: trip updates, service alerts, and vehicle positions, the last drawn from automatic location devices fitted to the buses, the trains, and the ferries. The agency’s own documentation says the feed is updated at least every 30 seconds, and anyone can sign up for a key and pull it. (Auckland Transport 2026) The same agency, in other words, gives away two accounts of the same network: a promise about what is supposed to happen, and a measurement of what is happening.

And the measurement is already being shown, just mostly not on the screen people actually stand under. Transit, Google Maps, and a handful of other apps render those live positions now, which is how, if you know to go looking, you can watch your delayed train crawl across a third-party map while the official app carries on offering the schedule. So the complaint has to be precise, because the dramatic version of it is false. Nobody is hiding the trains. The data is open, fresh, and free. The narrow, checkable, much stranger fact is this: the guessing on the platform is not forced by missing data, because the data is not missing. Somewhere between the feed and the default screen, the promise got chosen over the measurement.

A promise you cannot check

The number itself is not why nobody trusts the number. The distrust has a more precise cause. A timetable is a claim you have no way to test against the world in front of you: it says three minutes and offers nothing to check the three minutes against, so you stand there holding two pieces of evidence, the confident screen and the bare rails, with no way to reconcile them. A live position is the opposite kind of thing. It corresponds to something you can see, the train, on the map, actually moving, and then actually, visibly there. Trust, it turns out, is not really about accuracy. It is about being shown the version of the truth you can confirm with your own eyes. A schedule at 5:51 is exactly the version you cannot.

What each surface remembers

The difference between the two accounts goes deeper than one ruined evening, because they do not just fail differently. They remember differently. A timetable is a promise, and a promise keeps no receipts. When the 5:52 does not come, the timetable has nothing to answer for: it stated an intention, the intention was made in good faith, and the distance between the intention and the empty rail is yours to absorb. Tomorrow it will say 5:52 again, unembarrassed, because nothing about tonight was recorded anywhere in it. A feed of vehicle positions is the opposite kind of artefact here too. It keeps receipts by its nature: every late departure, every cancelled service, every train sitting dark in a siding becomes a fact with a timestamp that anyone could archive and add up. Shown the promise, a city’s experience of its own network stays a feeling. Shown the measurement, it becomes a record.

The map is not the easy answer

This is the point where the tidy version writes itself, the brave little map against the comfortable promise, and it is where the people who have thought hardest about open data would stop me. Lawrence Lessig argued, back when raw transparency was being sold as a civic cure-all, that tipping government data into public view does not by itself produce accountability: confronted with a wall of numbers and no way to weigh the caveats, people reach for the most cynical reading available, and cynicism is not trust. (Lawrence Lessig 2009) Pour every raw vehicle position over a tired commuter with no context and you may only teach them that the trains are hopeless, which is its own kind of damage. And a public record has side effects of its own. Campbell’s Law holds that the more a quantitative measure is used to judge an institution, the more the institution will manage the measure instead of the thing it measures. (Donald T. Campbell 1979) Make lateness visible and consequential, and somewhere, eventually, a timetable gets padded until the 5:52 is scheduled to take so long that it can no longer, technically, be late. The receipts cut both ways. They discipline the operator, and they hand the operator a ledger to game.

So the honest thing is not the raw feed, and it is not visibility for its own sake. It is the measurement shown plainly and in context at the moment it matters: the train on a small living map of the real city, threading toward your station, so that the screen and the platform finally agree. That is harder to build than either a timetable or a data dump, which is the grain of truth inside the technical story, and it is the thing I am building.

Why the official app defaults to the promise anyway, I do not know. It is tempting to observe that a schedule-first app is the obvious, defensible, cheaper thing to ship, and that defensible is exactly how a convenient choice hides in plain sight. But that sentence is the one claim in this essay I cannot check, and neither can anyone else: it smuggles a motive into a story that never needed one. The facts that can be checked are smaller, and they are enough. The measurement exists. It is public, half a minute fresh, and given away to anyone who asks. The screen most people stand under shows them the promise.

So when the 5:52 finally comes, or finally does not, the timetable will say what it has always said, and the feed will say what happened. One of those sentences can be tested against the rails in front of you and one cannot. One of them will remember tonight and one of them never will. The small dance on the platform, phone, track, phone, is what it looks like to be handed the wrong one.
